Baking & preparation instructions

What you need

Panbury’s pies are not pre-baked. The pastry is raw and needs to be baked before it is safe to consume.

Panbury’s pies must be baked in an oven, toaster oven or air fryer. They cannot be microwaved or steamed. It is best to place the pies on a baking tray in order to avoid spills or crumbs falling onto the floor of your oven.

Apply an egg wash to achieve a golden, shiny, and extra flavorful pie crust. Egg-washing is optional. If you don’t have eggs available, you can use milk instead.

How to make an eggwash: In a small bowl, whisk together a whole egg and a pinch of salt until well combined. Using a bristle or silicone pastry brush, lightly brush a thin layer of the egg wash on the surface of the pastry. Take care not to over apply the egg wash or let it pool on the surface of the pastry. Left over egg can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Alternatives to egg:
Milk is a good substitute for eggs, however for the ultimate shine and golden top crust it is best to use eggs.

Common Questions

No. Panbury’s pies are not microwavable. When frozen, the pastry is raw and needs to be baked (cooked) in an oven or toaster oven. If you previously baked a pie or purchased a baked pie in one of our stores, it is best to reheat it in an oven or toaster oven.

Yes you can, in fact defrosting your pie before baking it will allow the pastry to puff and go extra flaky. However if you let your pie defrost for too long, the pastry will get hot, and then it ill not puff and go as flaky.

It is best to defrost your pies in the refrigerator to guard against over heating the pastry. If you defrost your pie you should consume it within 3 days.

If your pie has a soggy bottom, it is probably because your oven requires a hotter temperature, additionally baking the pie on the lowest possible rack in your oven should result in a fully cooked bottom pastry. Do not be afraid to bake your pie for longer than the suggested time if you can tell that the pastry is not golden and cooked all the way around.

If properly sealed in the original plastic packaging or in an airtight container Panbury’s pies will last up to a year. If you are storing them in the refrigerator they need to be consumed within three days.
